Windows 11 Now Compatible with Older Devices: Should you Upgrade?
Microsoft recently announced that Windows 11 would now be compatible with a broader range of older devices. This move is a shift from the previous system requirements, which limited the upgrade to machines with newer hardware. Although on the face of it this may be an advantage, this blog discusses the reasons why it may still be prudent to upgrade your hardware.
Why Not Just Stick with Old Hardware?
For many businesses, the announcement may be viewed as positive news, as it opens the door to upgrading to the latest operating system (OS) without having to invest immediately in new devices. But, while this update may sound like a win, it’s important to understand that just because Windows 11 is now available for older devices, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best option. In fact, upgrading your hardware should still be strongly considered for several key reasons:
- Performance Issues: Older devices, even if they meet the minimum requirements for Windows 11, may struggle to handle the OS efficiently. With the increased demands that Windows 11 places on CPU, RAM, and storage, your existing hardware may experience sluggish performance, which could hamper productivity and efficiency.
- Security Risks: Microsoft dropped the requirement of using TPM (Trusted Platform Module) 2.0 in Windows 11, now allowing TPM 1.2 – found on a wider range of older devices. However, while this may make older devices technically compatible, they may lack the hardware to support advanced security features found in Windows 11. For example, TPM 1.2 does not allow the latest encryption methods to be used, like TPM 2.0 does. This could leave your business exposed to cyber threats.
- Compatibility Problems: Software and peripheral compatibility might also be an issue. Older devices may not be able to run certain newer applications or work seamlessly with modern hardware, creating friction within your IT ecosystem.
Hardware Not Meeting Minimum Requirements?
It is possible to install Windows 11 on some devices that do not meet the minimum requirements, however, this is not advised. A disclaimer by Microsoft that appears during an installation attempt will likely appear that describes the issues that the user will face, such as:
“If you proceed with installing Windows 11, your PC will no longer be supported and won't be entitled to receive updates.”
This means that it is essential to be aware of the status of your hardware, because if your device is too old then you may end up downloading Windows 11 without gaining any support whatsoever.
