All you need to know about Windows 10 end-of-life
The Windows operating system by Microsoft has gone through many iterations, with Windows 11 being the latest and Windows 12 not far around the corner. However, many people and organisations out there are still using Windows 10. They may have their reasons, such as familiarity, but with end-of-life fast approaching for the operating system, we will take a look about what the change means and what the people can expect from an upgrade.
What happens when Windows 10 goes end-of-life?
Windows 10 support will officially end on 14th October 2025. This means that Microsoft will no longer provide technical assistance, security fixes, or free software updates for Windows 10 users. While devices running Windows 10 will continue to function, they will be more vulnerable to security threats and their performance will likely decline, with no support from Microsoft to help resolve issues.
Despite the looming deadline, many still rely on Windows 10, making this warning highly relevant. The end of support will not be a gradual process—it will be an immediate shift, potentially catching businesses off guard if they're not prepared. As a result, upgrading to Windows 11 has now become one of the most pressing IT priorities for 2025.
The decision to move to Windows 11 isn't just about accessing upgraded features; it's about ensuring your systems remain secure and supported. After 14th October, any devices still running Windows 10 will be at heightened risk of cyber attacks—an issue we've seen repeatedly with previous Windows end-of-life transitions. If your organisation hasn’t yet made the switch, it’s highly recommended to do so before the deadline. Waiting could leave your devices vulnerable, compromise productivity, and expose your business to unnecessary risks.

Can I keep using Windows 10 after 2025?
Yes, Windows 10 will be able to keep being used, but it will be less secure and likely will experience performance issues. Additionally, Microsoft have announced that Office 365 apps on Windows 10 will also no longer be supported by the company. Like Windows 10, they may be used, but will no longer receive updates and security patches – impacting the functionality and security of some of the most widely used parts of the Microsoft suite.
Is Windows 11 better than 10?
Since its release in 2021, Windows 11 has become the go-to operating system for most Microsoft users, offering more than just continued support for Windows 10. It introduces a range of new features designed to enhance the user experience, such as a refreshed user interface, live captions during calls, and integrated passkeys for seamless access across websites and apps. These upgrades have made the transition to Windows 11 an attractive choice for those seeking improved functionality and a more modern, secure computing experience.
Can I upgrade my Windows 10 to 11 for free?
Yes, upgrading to Windows 11 is free from Microsoft.
Do I have to buy a new computer for Windows 11?
You do not need a new device as long as your current device meets the Windows 11 minimum requirements. It is worth noting that these requirements are subject to change; for example, Microsoft dropped the requirement of using TPM (Trusted Platform Module) 2.0 in Windows 11, now allowing TPM 1.2. This has opened up Windows 11 eligibility to a wider range of older devices. However, although technical eligible, it is still advisable to upgrade hardware as these older devices may experience performance issues, security risks, and compatibility problems with other apps.
Does upgrading from Windows 10 to 11 delete files?
One common reason for hesitation in upgrading to Windows 11 is the fear that one will lose their files. Fortunately, this should not be an issue, so long as you select "keep personal files and apps" during Windows Setup. However, outside of this process, users are responsible for protecting their files, as Microsoft does not automatically back-up as a default in their settings, so it is important you have your backup settings configured correctly. In fact, if losing files is a big fear, then it is more prudent to upgrade to Windows 11 sooner rather than later – the longer Windows 10 is used after end-of-life, the greater the likelihood of losing data from a security or software problem.
Is Windows 12 available now?
Some people may be holding off upgrading due to the belief that they can skip Windows 11 and wait for Windows 12 to become available. However, Microsoft has not yet announced a release date for Windows 12, and with Windows 10 end-of-life now only seven months away, the likelihood of there being an overlap between a Windows 12 release and Windows 10 still receiving support is less likely be the day. Therefore, a Windows 11 upgrade should remain the focus, especially as that will mean less of a dramatic jump for users once a Windows 12 update becomes available.
