2012 Year in Review

Posted by Dan Pope on 03/01/13 08:30
In many ways the late naughties and the early part of this decade (what are we calling this one by the way?) have been characterised by what’s wrong with this country: the recession, the riots, union strikes, press misdemeanours and expenses scandals. And while 2012 has not been bereft of such of problems, it has been punctuated by events – The Jubilee, The Olympics and the Paralympics - that to many people’s surprise and even more’s delight, cut a swathe through all the gloom and cynicism and for a few short, golden weeks made everyone feel… well a bit better; about life and about Britain - Great Britain.

A Journey in Aggregation

Posted by Dan Pope on 15/04/10 15:20
As Network Manager at Fluidata, I’m often pulled into sales calls to provide technical consultation on the various products and services somebody may be considering purchasing from us. These calls can be quite eye opening, and in particular have given me an understanding of the reputation of certain services in the market place. One such thing I’ve learnt from this, is that that bonded services (despite being around for many years), are still viewed with a large amount of scepticism by IT managers, and are generally considered less reliable than single line services.

Video Conferencing into the office

Posted by Dan Pope on 08/03/10 10:13
Communication has always been a key tool for businesses, so with the invention of the internet and email the way in which the business world worked changed dramatically. Suddenly anywhere on the globe both individuals and organisations could connect with others with speed and ease. Although this development brought everyone closer together this could never replace the true value gained in face-to-face relationships.  This is shown by the importance many companies place on meeting their colleagues and clients – even if this means travelling across the world to do so.

It’s not all about headline speeds

Posted by Dan Pope on 08/02/10 09:29
I recently handled an enquiry with a prospect whose VC system was being let down by its underlying internet connection. The connection in place was a cheap Annex-M (O2) solution, the problem an unsatisfactory upstream data transfer rate that was fluctuating between 0.8 Mb/s and 1.3 Mb/s and accompanied by high jitter. His incumbent provider had informed him that with his line length too long for SDSL (2.4KM),  the only solution to improve his upload would be a bonded solution or leased lines; as he was already running on the quickest ADSL technology available.
